You go where your eyes go

Life Lesson: You Go Where Your Eyes Go

It was one of those brutally hot days. The kind of day where the pavement radiates heat like an engine on the verge of blowing. And there I was—jogging in it. Soaking up the sun like someone who had clearly lost his mind. I swear, I saw buzzards circling overhead.

At one point, I noticed my gaze had dropped. I was staring at the ground, watching my feet, counting the cracks in the sidewalk. And with that shift in focus, something else changed too.

My posture slumped.
My steps got heavier.
My breathing turned shallow.

Running became exponentially harder—not because the weather changed or the route changed, but because my focus changed.

In a moment of clarity, I lifted my gaze toward a fixed point in the distance—something stable, something beyond the heat, the cracks, and the struggle. Almost immediately, my posture straightened, my breathing steadied, and my pace improved.

The only thing that changed was my focus.

You Go Where Your Eyes Go

This principle isn’t just about running—it’s about life.

Where your eyes go, your body follows.
Where your focus goes, your life follows.

If you’re always focused on what’s wrong, what’s lacking, or what’s painful, your life will follow that path—heavy steps, shallow breath, low posture.

But if you lift your eyes…
To hope.
To truth.
To Christ.
To a vision that transcends your circumstances…
Everything begins to align.

Want to Change Your Life?

Change your focus.

Here’s a simple 3-step practice to help you stay aligned:

1. Pause at each meal.
Before you eat, take 30 seconds to ask:
What have I been focusing on today?
Gratitude or grumbling? Progress or problems? Faith or fear?

2. Redirect if needed.
If your focus is off, willfully shift it.
Fix your eyes on something true, noble, eternal. Philippians 4:8 is a great filter.

3. Anchor your focus.
If distraction is a common struggle, place visual reminders in your path—a photo, a note, a Scripture verse… heck, even a tattoo!
Whatever helps you lift your eyes consistently.

You go where your eyes go.

Lift them high.
Fix them on the right thing.
And watch your life follow in a better direction.
